What happens when your front-end application becomes too large for one team to manage? How do you distribute ownership of multiple products inside the same application? What if different teams want to use different frameworks or tools? At XO Group, we faced many of these same questions as our front-end applications and teams continued to grow. We needed to find a way to support multiple teams in a single application without sacrificing efficiency or autonomy. That’s when we decided to move towards a micro-frontend architecture - a composition of independent front-end applications glued together with a set of shared resources to make a cohesive user experience. In this talk, I will discuss lessons learned, benefits and drawbacks, as well as our future plans to bolster squad autonomy and ownership.
