Have you ever wanted to mentor someone but not sure where to start? Or have you had someone ask you to be their mentor and you’re unsure how to help them or how regularly to meet with them? Then this talk is for you! I have had some amazing mentors help me kick start my career, and I am here to share with you from a mentee’s perspective what we look for and how you can be a great mentor. What I want to cover: Why mentorship for new members of any team is important for tech companies. It helps both personal development and a high performing team. For example, in my case, this turned out to be great for the team as I was able to contribute better code, I was excited to come to work and I evangelize my company, my team, and our product. What can you do to be more welcoming towards junior devs and to help develop a really strong team that everyone wants to be part of. How did mentors welcome me? Not just technical advice and help. They asked my opinion on how the team could be better and proactively asked for me to bring my ideas to the table. Made it safe to ask questions. Finally, how even taking a little time to talk to people who are looking for your advice can be rewarding and valuable.
